A pterygium is a growth of tissue on the surface of the eye that can cause redness, irritation, and, in some cases, changes in vision if it progresses.
What Is a Pterygium?
A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of tissue that develops on the conjunctiva, often extending toward the cornea. It is sometimes referred to as “surfer’s eye” because it is commonly associated with prolonged exposure to sunlight, wind, or dry environments. In its early stages, a pterygium may cause only mild redness or irritation.
However, as it grows, it can begin to affect the shape of the cornea and interfere with vision. Because progression can vary from person to person, early evaluation helps determine the best course of treatment before symptoms worsen.
