Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a vision condition affecting nearly a third of children and adults in the United States. The eye focuses properly on nearby objects, while distant objects appear blurry. This imbalance typically occurs because the cornea is excessively curved and the eye elongated. Due to this, the light entering the eye focuses in front of the retina instead of fully on the retina. Another reason for the imbalance may be due to the eye having an oblong shape (astigmatism).
Myopia can be managed non-surgically in a similar way to astigmatism, presbyopia, and hyperopia (farsightedness) by prescribing glasses or contact lenses.
We understand that glasses and contacts are often a hassle for many of our patients. Therefore, a permanent treatment option for myopia includes performing laser vision correction surgery or lens replacement surgery.
