Styes and chalazia are common eyelid conditions that cause localized swelling, irritation, and discomfort, often requiring targeted treatment to resolve fully and prevent recurrence.
What Is a Stye vs. a Chalazion?
A stye is a painful, red bump that forms along the edge of the eyelid, typically caused by a bacterial infection in an oil gland or hair follicle. It often develops quickly and may resemble a small pimple near the eyelashes. A chalazion, on the other hand, is usually less painful and develops more gradually.
It occurs when an oil gland becomes blocked, leading to a firm, localized lump within the eyelid. While both conditions affect the eyelids, their causes and progression differ, which is why accurate diagnosis is important for proper treatment.
