Astigmatism:Types and Treatments
- Posted on: Aug 30 2015
Astigmatism is a common problem which is characterized by fuzzy, blurred, or distorted vision. It is basically caused due to an error in the shape of the cornea, which compromises the eye’s ability to focus light effectively. This means that the focal point occurs either behind the retina or in front of the retina instead of on it, causing unclear vision. There are no known ways to prevent this condition as the causes are not clear, although genetics seem to contribute significantly. People suffering from Astigmatism generally experience eye irritation and headaches when focusing on a book or a screen for a long time. There are three types of Astigmatism which needs to be treated differently.
Primary types and correction
- Myopic Astigmatism: This condition is also popularly called nearsightedness. This means that eyes cannot focus on distant objects effectively. This can be treated by using corrective lenses or surgery. Corrective lenses are a temporary solution, although they are the least invasive. Surgery, on the other hand, would ensure permanent correction.
- Hyperopic Astigmatism: This condition, popularly called farsightedness, happens when the eyes are unable to focus on nearby objects properly. This would be caused when the cornea is incorrectly curved causing the focal point to occur behind the retina. This condition can be treated by using corrective lenses or laser surgery
- Presbyopia: This occurs due to the natural aging process which causes the lens of the eye to lose its flexibility. This reduces the ability of the eye to focus on nearby objects, and it may even affect people who may have undergone surgical corrections in the past. It generally affects people in the age group of late 40s or early 50s. This can be treated by laser correction or using corrective lenses.
