Is Laser Cataract Surgery Safe?
Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the U.S. with over 3 million Americans opting to have this procedure every year. Using lasers for the flap incision, to soften the cataract, and to make peripheral incisions (if necessary) adds a higher degree of safety. Clinical studies have shown that the circular opening made to access and remove the cataract is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with a laser than what is achieved with a human hand. Also, less ultrasound energy is required with laser cataract surgery, and this quickens the patient’s recovery.
This is an incredibly safe procedure, and the FDA has approved the femtosecond laser specifically for this surgery.
