Eyes are one of the most important sensory organs in the body, and it is important to keep them healthy and safe. A number of diseases that affect the eyes can be easily cured, but only if they are detected early on. This makes regular eye examinations extremely important for people of all ages. Even if you have never had any problems with vision, it is still advisable to get regular eye check-ups done. The frequency of eye examinations depends on a number of factors, which have been explained in the next section.
How Often Should You Get Your Eyes Tested?
If you have a history of vision-related issues in your family, make sure that you visit your eye doctor regularly. For most other people, the below schedule works well.
- Infants and children under 3: Children should have their very first eye check-up at the age of three, unless they have any vision problems by birth that warrant earlier eye examinations.
- Between 3 and 20 years of age: You may not need to visit your eye specialist unless you have an eye condition that requires regular medical attention.
- Between the ages of 20 to 30: People should have eye examinations every two years. Those who have vision problems, or have had surgeries or other procedures performed on their eyes should visit their doctor as prescribed.
- 30 and beyond: Even for those with no history of vision problems, it is advisable to have a regular eye examination done once every year, since most eye problems and disorders develop post 30.
- Exceptions: People suffering from diabetes, cataract and glaucoma need to visit their eye specialists more often. The frequency depends on the severity of the condition and the recommendation of your doctor.
If you notice itchiness and irritation, frequent headaches, difficulty seeing or reading at arm’s length, excessive squinting or blinking of the eyes should be given immediate medical attention, as they might be symptoms of an underlying problems with your eyes.
