Most Common Eye Conditions
- Posted on: Nov 30 2014
Whether you have vision problems or not, it’s important to visit an ophthalmologist annually for a routine eye exam. During routine eye exams, more than your vision is being evaluated. Many other health conditions can be diagnosed through examining the eyes. In addition to other health conditions that may be diagnosed, common conditions that affect vision such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia may be addressed. These conditions are often treated with prescription lenses or laser vision correction surgery. To follow is some more information about common eye conditions.
Astigmatism
- Individuals with astigmatism have abnormalities in the shape of their corneas (the lens of the eye)
- The difference in shape causes light to improperly enter the retina
- Causes difficulties with focusing
- Treated with prescription lenses, contact lenses, or laser vision correction surgery
Nearsightedness, or Myopia
- Affects nearly one-third of the United States population, including adults and children
- The eyes focus on up-close objects, obstructing objects far away
- Objects at distances are difficult to see clearly
- Can occur along with or because of astigmatism
- Treated with prescription lenses, contact lenses, or laser vision correction surgery
Farsightedness, or Hyperopia
- This condition is opposite of nearsightedness
- Individuals with this condition see clearly at a distance, where up-close objects are blurry
- When light enters the eye, it refracts, or bends, creating issues with focusing
- Treated with prescription lenses, contact lenses, or laser vision correction surgery
Presbyopia
- Natural part of aging
- Caused by a hardening of the lens of the eyes
- Occurs in all individuals as early as age 40
- Occurs in individuals who have had laser vision correction at a young age
- Treated with prescription lenses, contact lenses, or laser vision correction surgery
