Eyelid lesions are among the most common reasons patients visit New York Laser Vision, whether it's a painful stye that appeared overnight or a stubborn chalazion that hasn't gone away for weeks. Most eyelid lesions are harmless, but an accurate diagnosis is the only way to know for sure.
What Are Eyelid Lesions?
Eyelid lesions are bumps, cysts, or growths that develop on or near the eyelid. Most are caused by a blocked oil gland or a localized infection, and the large majority are benign. Common triggers include:
- Blocked meibomian or Zeis glands
- Bacterial infection at the base of an eyelash
- Chronic eyelid inflammation (blepharitis)
- Benign overgrowth of skin or fatty deposits
