Understanding Cataracts And Implantable Lenses
Cataracts are a common issue affecting about half of Americans by the age of 75. This condition results from the breakdown of proteins and fibers in your eye's natural lens, leading to progressively hazy or cloudy vision. If left untreated, cataracts can eventually lead to blindness. The solution to cataracts lies in cataract surgery. Implantable lenses, or intraocular lenses (IOLs), are medical devices surgically implanted into the eye to correct vision problems. During cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an IOL. Implantable lenses can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses and can also be used to correct refractive errors such as:
